This expository talk will introduce various properties of groups and unitary representations of groups that have importance within functional analysis and operator algebras. Topics will include amenability, growth rates, rapid decay property, weak containment and amenable representations. This talk is intended to provide grad students with some of the background required for the following day's talk "Entropies and Poisson boundaries of random walks on groups with rapid decay".
